The Drug Regimen Review Center is a part of the University of Utah College of Pharmacy and Pharmacotherapy Outcomes Research Center. We work in conjunction with the Utah Department of Health to review the medication profiles of a subset of Medicaid patients who exceed seven prescriptions per month. The purpose of these reviews is to help clinicians find ways to optimize drug therapy and to reduce drug costs without compromising patient care.

Reviews are conducted by registered pharmacists with clinical training and a broad knowledge of drug therapy management. Once the reviews are conducted, letters are mailed to prescribing physicians detailing the suggestions provided by our pharmacists.

Pre-determined categories of concern for these reviews include additive toxicity, drug-disease interaction, drug-drug interaction, treatment without an indication, streamlining therapy and therapeutic duplication, over-the-counter availability, sub-therapeutic dosing and more.

After patient are reviewed, they are followed forward in time to determine whether there have been any reductions in cost or number of prescriptions. To see the impact of our program on cohorts of reviewed patients, see our most recent annual report. Our most conservative estimate is that our program has resulted in $20 million in savings since it began in early 2002.

On the site you can also see our most common review recommendations, review case studies of individual patients, get answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about the program, and get contact information for the DRRC clinical and administrative staff.
